Al-'Alīm (العَلِيم), "The All-Knowing," "He who knows all things," is one of the most repeated Names of Allah in the Qur'an. It designates He whose knowledge encompasses all things: the past and the future, the visible and the invisible, the secrets of hearts and the falling leaf. Nothing — absolutely nothing — escapes His knowledge. For the believer, this Name is at once a warning and an immense consolation.
What does Al-'Alīm mean?
The name Al-'Alīm comes from the Arabic root 'ayn-lām-mīm (ع ل م), which expresses knowledge and understanding ('ilm). Its intensive form designates a perfect, total science, without beginning or acquisition. Applied to Allah, this Name designates:
- A science that encompasses everything: the heavens and the earth, every atom, every thought, every intention — even before it is born in the heart.
- A science without learning: the creature learns and forgets; the science of Allah is an attribute of His essence, which no ignorance has preceded and which no forgetting alters.
- A science of the outward and the inward: He knows the apparent and the hidden, the present, the future, and even what will not come to pass — and how it would have been if it had come to pass.
Al-'Alīm in the Quran
Allah says:
وَعِندَهُ مَفَاتِحُ الْغَيْبِ لَا يَعْلَمُهَا إِلَّا هُوَ
« It is He who holds the keys to the Unseen: none knows them but Him. He knows what is on the land and in the sea; not a leaf falls without His knowledge. » (Surah Al-An'ām, 6:59)
And the angels themselves acknowledge:
سُبْحَانَكَ لَا عِلْمَ لَنَا إِلَّا مَا عَلَّمْتَنَا ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ الْعَلِيمُ الْحَكِيمُ
« Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, You are the All-Knowing, the All-Wise. » (Surah Al-Baqara, 2:32)
All human knowledge — scientific, religious, technical — is but a drop that the All-Knowing has graciously chosen to teach. This is why Islam so greatly honors the pursuit of knowledge: to learn is to receive a fragment of the gift of Al-'Alīm.
Living with Al-'Alīm in Daily Life
1. Purify Your Intention
People judge appearances; Al-'Alīm knows intentions. Whoever lives by this Name works on their inner self more than their image: what is the point of appearing pious before creation if the One who knows sees something else in the heart?
2. Find Comfort in Being Known
No one understands your trial? Al-'Alīm knows it in its smallest details — the hidden tear, the invisible effort, the injustice that no witness has seen. Nothing of your good is lost: all is known, all is recorded, all will be rewarded.
3. Seek Knowledge with Humility
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever takes a path seeking knowledge, Allah will facilitate for him by that a path to Paradise." (reported by Muslim). And the more the believer learns, the more he measures the vastness of what he does not know — humility is the signature of true scholars.
Invocation with the Name Al-'Alīm
Allah commanded His Prophet ﷺ to make this request, the only increase that the Qur'an commands one to seek: وَقُل رَّبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا
"And say: 'My Lord, increase me in knowledge.'" (Surah Tā-Hā, 20:114). You may also repeat the words of the angels: "Subhānaka lā 'ilma lanā illā mā 'allamtanā" — "Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us" (2:32), before every study or every decision.
Frequently Asked Questions about Al-'Alīm
What is the difference between Al-'Alīm and Al-Khabīr?
The two Names converge, but Al-'Alīm designates the knowledge that encompasses all things, while Al-Khabīr emphasizes knowledge of intimate and hidden realities — the inner detail of things. The Quran often associates them.
Does Allah know our deeds before we do them?
Yes: His knowledge precedes and encompasses all things, without constraining man. We truly choose our deeds and bear responsibility for them; Allah has known from eternity what we will choose — His knowledge is not a constraint, it is perfect knowledge.
How do we invoke Allah by this Name?
Allah says: "To Allah belong the most beautiful Names. Invoke Him by these Names" (7:180). The student, the seeker, he who must decide a complex matter will say: "Yā 'Alīm, 'allimnī mā yanfa'unī" — "O Omniscient, teach me what benefits me."
